SubSmith is a desktop app for learning a language from video and audio files you already have. You drop in a file such as an MKV, MP4 or MP3 and it generates a timestamped transcript on your own machine, in any of 99+ languages. While watching, you hover over words for definitions, fix the transcript or timings, and send sentences with audio clips and screenshots to Anki as flashcards. Subtitles can also be exported as SRT or plain text. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, plus iPhone and iPad, with Android in beta. Media files are processed locally. After a 7-day free trial it costs $15 a year or $40 for a lifetime licence.
